the Twelve Beauties of Jinling – Jia Tanchun

Jia Tanchun is one of the Twelve Beauties of Jinling (refers to the twelve excellent ladies) in the book of The Dream of Red Mansions. She is a beauty of great ambition and strong ability.

Jia Tanchun, the daughter of Jia Zheng and Aunt Zhao (the concubine of Jia Zheng), is the third of the four sisters of the Jia Family. Though she is one of the ladies in the family of Jia, the fact that she is born of a concubine will never change. The fact always makes her feel inferior to others. However, her talent makes her think highly of herself. Therefore, she is usually in an awkward dilemma.

She is the first person to come up with the idea of establishing the poetry club. Obviously, she is a thoughtful, far-sighted woman. When Wang Xifeng is sick, she is in charge of the affairs in the family of Jia. In order to solve the financial crisis, she carries out a series of reforms, such as the system of contracting, etc. These are great reforms but it is too late to save the whole family.

Jia Tanchun is totally different from other beauties as she has her own aspiration for her life. She is a statesman with misery awareness and concerns the fate of the whole family. She tried to do something for her family to make it thrive but all she has done is in vain. She has strong ability but cannot display her talent freely. She cannot achieve her ambition due to the limitation of the times. Finally, she has no choice but to marry abroad.
