Jingwei Filling the Sea

Nvwa was the youngest daughter of emperor Yandi. She perished in the East Sea when she was quite young. After her death, she turned into a bird and tried to fill up the sea. Each day, with her crying “jingwei, jingwei.”, she held stones and tree branches with her beak and threw them into the sea.

When the sea scoffed at her, claiming that she would not be able to fill it up even a million years, she claimed that she would then proceed to take ten million years, even one hundred million years.

The bird then was called Jingwei by our ancestors. The story is widely considered as a symbol of dogged determination and perseverance in the face of seemingly impossible odds.
