In Chinese culture, chicken forms part of the symbolism of the phoenix. For example, there is a Chinese dish with chicken feet cooked in a black bean sauce and its name is “Feng Zhua”, which means Phoenix’s talon in Chinese.
At Chinese wedding banquets, having lobster and chicken together indicates that the dragon and the phoenix will get along very well as chicken symbolizes the phoenix while lobster, which is literally called dragon shrimp in Chinese, symbolizes the dragon. It also indicates that the newlyweds will get along very well because in Chinese culture, dragon and phoenix represent man and woman respectively.
Chicken is also a must dish in the Spring Festival. It is believed that having chicken means having good luck in the coming new year as the pronunciation of chicken in Chinese is the same as that of good luck.
