Swinging


Swinging is a kind of folk traditional Chinese entertainment which the performer swings back and forth with a tread plate hung on a frame by long ropes.

Swinging has a long history in China which can date back to about 100,000 years ago. As time went on, it became a display and was welcomed by many people. During the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), became a folk activity performed on several festivals, such as the Tomb Sweeping Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, etc. Swinging also gave an opportunity for young men and women to meet each other.

Legend goes that swinging competition was held to pay homage and respect to the deities. Until now, swinging competitions are still held by some ethnic groups. During the festivals, the competitors will wear their fineries and decorate their swings as beautiful as possible. The high flying and graceful competitors will receive lots of cheers and applause.
