Shan Hai Jing, literally called Collection of Mountains and Seas, is an ancient literature on geography in ancient China. With more than 2,200 years old, it is regarded as one of the most miraculous books in China. It is also an essential source for the research on primitive society, primitive surname, tribes, universe, nature and social development as it is also a collection of historical data in ancient China.
Shan Hai Jing includes 18 volumes and consists of Shan Jing, Hai Jing, Da Huang Jing, and Hainei Jing. It is said that the book was written by Yu, one of the forefathers of ancient China.
The book also contains a lot of Chinese mythological stories, including the myths of Pangu Separates the Sky from the Earth, Nüwa Created Human Beings with Mud, etc. Most of the stories in the book are illustrated with vivid pictures to better convey the meanings. These stories, which have great impact on Chinese literature, are widely spread in China from one generation to another.
