Ruyi | Ancient Chinese Culture

Ruyi

Ruyi, literally means “as you wish” in Chinese, is a decorative object in ancient China. It stands for good wishes, like good fortune, longevity, prosperity, blessing, etc. A traditional Ruyi always combines two parts: a head in the shape of cloud, heart, or lingzhi, and a long handle in the shape of a flat S.

No one knows when it appeared in history. However, it was not born for decorative purpose. Originally, it was made for scratching itches on one’s back. Later, people began to appreciate its symbolism, decoration, etc. And then, it gradually became a pure ornamental object.

It can be made of a wide range of materials, such as gold, jade, crystal, precious metals, hardwood, semi-precious gems, ivory, coral, bamboo, etc. The craftsmanship of Ru Yi is also incredible and superb.
