Pavilion, also called Ting in Chinese, is a traditional part of Chinese architecture. Its history can date back to the Zhou Dynasty (1046–256 BC).

As a common sight in China, Pavilion is built for different purposes. It may provide a place for rest; give a roof to protect the engraved record of an important event, etc. However, the earliest pavilions were built for military purpose. They were used as the watchtowers to observe the surroundings.

According to their shapes when viewed from the above, they are classified into different types, including square, hexagon, round, octagonal, a five-petal flower, etc.

They are built of stone, grass, wood, bamboo, bronze, etc. Among them, pavilions built of bronze are rare. Fortunately, we still have chance to appreciate the precious ones. The most charming one is Baoyunge Pavilion of Precious Clouds in Beijing’s Summer Palace, whose entire structure is cast in bronze.
