There were several versions about the origin for this game. Some people believed that Confucius, the great Chinese philosopher, developed the game in about 500 BC. Some said that it was invented by an ancient Chinese strategist who used tiles to mock battle formations. Some others said that a nobleman who lived in Shanghai area created the game between 1870 and 1875.
