Clock in Chinese Gift-giving Culture

Gift-giving is quite common in China and it has been an important part of Chinese culture. However, one thing which would never be welcomed is the clock.

Why Chinese do not like clocks as gifts? As in Mandarin Chinese, the spoken name of a clock has the same pronunciation of termination, having the meaning of death in Chinese. The phrase giving a clock has the same pronunciation of attending a father’s funeral. Therefore, if you give somebody a clock, he/she may think that you are expecting to attend his/her funeral. Such a gift will be considered as a curse.
